1963年ニオール生まれ。1981年から1987年までブールジュ国立美術学校で学び、ニューヨーク大学ティッシュ芸術大学院を修了。1995年、ローマのヴィラ・メディチにレジデントとして滞在し、そこで初の長編映画を監督した。アングレーム、ナンシー、ブールジュ、カモンドなどの美術学校、建築学校で映画と映像批評を教えた後、パリのパレ・ド・トーキョーのリサーチ・ラボ、ル・パヴィヨンのアーティスティック・ディレクターを務める。1998年から2018年にかけて、映画と現代アートに関わる作品のカタログ化、配給、編集を行った「点線面」というグループの創設者でもある。2004年から2013年にかけて、映画館で公開された5本の長編映画を監督した。2014年から2017年まで日本に滞在し、ヴィラ九条山のディレクターを務めた。2018年から2022年までエクサンプロヴァンス高等芸術学校の学長を務め、現在はドキュメンタリーの執筆活動を展開している。

Born in 1963 in Niort, Christian Merlhiot studied at the École nationale des beaux-arts de Bourges from 1981 to 1987 and completed his training at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. In 1995, he was a resident at the Villa Medici in Rome, where he directed his first feature film. Christian Merlhiot has taught cinema and image criticism at a number of art and architecture schools, including Angoulême, Nancy, Bourges and Camondo, before becoming the artistic director of Le Pavillon, the research lab of Palais de Tokyo in Paris. He is the founder of a collective called pointligneplan, which has catalogued, distributed and edited films at the crossroads of cinema and contemporary art between 1998 and 2018. He directed five feature films released in movie theaters between 2004 and 2013. From 2014 to 2017, Christian Merlhiot lived in Japan, where he was director of Villa Kujoyama. He was director of the École supérieure d'art d'Aix-en-Provence from 2018 to 2022, and is now developing a documentary writing practice.
